Below, you can find out all about the local context of this borough's architecture, areas undergoing change and projects under construction.
Waltham Forest has a series of regeneration projects underway to give its residents a better quality of life. Recently Walthamstow town centre has undergone regeneration with the completion of a masterplan. The re-creation of the town square and gardens has proved popular with residents, shoppers and visitors alike.
The Blackhorse Lane area has been picked out as a site possessing great potential for improvement. It’s location on the edge of the Lea Valley Park, small but strong business base and young population contribute to this. The site will receive over 2,000 new homes and potentially 1,000 new jobs over the next decade. The area will also gain new parks, roads, schools and community facilities as part of the project. Fortunately Blackhorse Lane has its own station nearby and by transforming the area around the station the council will provide an attractive gateway into Waltham Forrest.
Other areas of current regeneration include South Grove and Walthamstow Arcade Site. The Council is working with local businesses and other stakeholders to provide a framework that will outline the regeneration of the South Grove area. The vision is for the framework to allow the site to remain an employment hub but with better pedestrian links throughout thus elevating shops, homes and other community facilities. For the consultation on the arcade site the council’s youth advisors engaged with over 150 young people. Results of further consultation, market research and Council Questionnaires have been compiled into a final report. The report is now informing the development for the use of the site over the next 2 years. The council hopes that the outcome will emulate the results of the report in that the arcade will be home to innovative and entertaining activities that may inflect on the long-term proposals for the site.
