The Council holds a vision of Sutton as a sustainable suburb within London, hoping to achieve its objectives by 2025. Amongst the key initiatives is the desire to improve the streetscape and living environment. The proximity of green spaces to the town centre, especially Manor Park, will undergo comprehensive improvements to maximise the benefits of having such spaces around a built up area.

Although the Sutton Housing Partnership now carries out the management of housing stock, the council is still responsible for housing regeneration. There is an ongoing project at Durand Close, Carshalton where some 1960’s maisonettes are currently being demolished to make way for some new homes. The scheme will be completed by 2014. Sheltered housing is also being reviewed, as some in the council’s portfolio contain shared facilities, which are considered unsuitable for the 21st century. A recent scheme in Cheam Village is also currently under consultation.

All the work done in the following years will be done with the knowledge that for Sutton to retain its appearance of an attractive suburb there must be a balance between housing and employment growth thus regeneration will be concentrated in the town centre. Last summer regeneration of the town centre began with work due to finish later this year. Improvements include new surfacing, lighting, trees and plants and more space for entertainment. There will be a new layout with the station, town square and road junctions being redesigned. Last autumn the town began on its green objective as the first of 30 trees were planted in Sutton High Street. Plans are expected to expand over the years creating retail, employment and residential growth in the town centre in the period up to 2025.
