Below, you can find out all about the local context of this borough's architecture, areas undergoing change and projects under construction.
Redbridge is known as the ‘leafy’ suburb, as it enjoys one of the best living environments in London. The borough stretches from Ilford and Seven Kings in the south, through Newbury Park and Barkingside, to Woodford Green, Hainault and Woodford Bridge in the north.
Current initiatives in the borough include:
The Gants Hill Area Action Plan focuses on the roundabout at Gants Hill, which is an area of major traffic congestion. Since the preparation of this plan, work is underway to remodel and signalise the junction, giving more emphasis to pedestrians and cyclists. The AAP also focuses on housing development in this centre, to assist Redbridge’s target to build 9, 050 new homes in the borough by 2017.
Ilford Town Centre Area Action seeks to improve Ilford’s profile and performance as one of London’s leading town centres. It provides for major new housing and retail development, and an expanded evening economy based on quality restaurants and bars. The currently small population of the town centre is expected to grow substantially. As part of the emerging Crossrail scheme, the proposal to rebuild Ilford station will create a new town centre entry point.
Barkingside Improvement Plan focuses on Barkingside town centre, which has always been popular and the plan aims to continue its success, providing a vision for a functional and attractive town for the future. Improvements will tackle the physical environment and accessibility of the town centre, with key sites redeveloped to create better urban form and sense of place.
Pre-submission Crossrail Corridor Area Action Plan considers the east-west linear corridor of the existing mainline railway. By 2017, Crossrail will follow this railway line, running parallel to the High Road, from Ilford town centre, eastwards to the borough boundary at Chadwell Heath. Crossrail will provide a unique opportunity to greatly improve the accessibility of the area and act as a catalyst to promote investment and regeneration that delivers a wide range of local community benefits. This plan, once adopted in 2011, identifies a number of development opportunity sites, and will facilitate improvements to the overall character and quality of the area, seeking to ensure that the High Road becomes a vibrant, successful and sustainable community.
