The Square Mile
London's historic core: a hugely impressive mix of history and modernity whose dedication to financial services belies an architectural richness of new buildings populating an historic street pattern that goes back to the Middle Ages. Its focal points are Bank and St Paul's cathedral, London's most salient and important landmarks. But around the City's expanding edges are a mix of new developments that illustrate the variety of modern British architecture, and the outstanding architectural debate in the City which concerns the issue of tall buildings.
Walking tour, departing from City of London Information Centre, St Paul's Churchyard EC4M 8BX at 10am. £9.50/£7.50 concessions. Booking essential, tel 020 7383 2131 Mon-Fri
Next dates:
Sat 20 March, Sat 17 April, Sat 15 May

South London Regeneration
Just south of the river is one of London’s most dynamic areas with regeneration projects valued in the billions. Borough, Bankside and Bermondsey are in a sustained period of change, with many new developments such as Bankside 123 and Palestra and new cultural venues moving into one of the oldest quarters of London. Industrial buildings are being put to new uses, and housing developments are transforming communities such as at Elephant and Castle which is about to embark on an 8 year redevelopment programme.
Coach tour, departing from The Building Centre, Store Street WC1E 7BT at 10am. £18.50/£13 concessions. Booking essential, tel 020 7383 2131 Mon-Fri
Next dates:
Sat 27 March, Sat 24 April, Sat 22 May

Hidden West End
London’s second heartland, encompassing the historical expansion from the seats of power within Whitehall and the City. Here, the aristocratic estates of West London were speculatively developed into the set of Georgian streets and squares such as those of Bloomsbury that characterise this area. Legal and educational institutions sit side by side. But this is also London's cultural core, where major contemporary adaptations and upgrades of historical landmarks make them fit for modern purpose.
Walking tour, departing from The Building Centre, Store Street WC1E 7BT at 10am. £9.50/£7.50 concessions. Booking essential, tel 020 7383 2131 Mon-Fri
Next dates:
Sat 1 May, Sat 29 May

East End Transformation
Just east of London's financial district marks the start of the East End, once a scruffy hinterland. The urban character of Spitalfields, Whitechapel and beyond has in recent years been undergoing a transformation. Mile End’s ‘High Street 2012’ will see further improvements in the run up to the London 2012 Olympics. The construction of the games venues and infrastructure in Stratford is well underway, whilst over the river Greenwich Peninsula is rapidly becoming a destination in its own right.
