Below, you can find out all about the local context of this borough's architecture, areas undergoing change and projects under construction.

Amongst the London Borough’s Lambeth has one of the most exciting and busy regeneration programmes. Sweeping across the whole borough the Regeneration Delivery Plan aims to target areas where there can be a better and more creative partnership as well as maximising on existing partnerships. It aims to act as a framework for public sector investment in the borough and feed into the Sustainable Communities Strategy.

Regeneration projects are going on across the borough such as that at Clapham Gateway and the council’s initiatives on empty shops. The Lower Marsh Regeneration Project is an exemplar of current schemes. The vision for the area is to create a radically improved public space and for Lower Marsh to reconnect with the surrounding area. It is hoped that designs will create an attractive environment that improves trading opportunities, safety and walking routes.

However it is the council’s determined long-term regeneration programme ‘Future Lambeth’ that is the most notable. Through the programme the council will work with both public and private partners to develop major investment in the borough that will encourage maximum improvements. Areas in which the scheme has been implemented are Brixton, Clapham, Kennington, Norwood and Streatham.

Future Brixton embraces several projects including the development of a masterplan. The plans for improving Brixton Town Centre stretch across fifteen years and the key themes focus on sustainability and town character. This February a new public space, Windrush Square, was opened to the public. Also the works by Transport for London in the town centre are nearing completion. The Future Brixton team has also been developing a programme whereby Brixton can benefit from new public artworks. The programme works with local artists to produce unique pieces across the town centre.

Another extensive project underway is Future Clapham. The council’s partner in the scheme, Cathedral Group is currently working on the development for the leisure centre site. Future Clapham is lucky enough to receive funding from Kickstart run by the Homes and Communities Agency, which aims to support regeneration schemes through the recession. The development will include a community library, healthcare centre as well as the leisure centre. The preparations for the demolition of Mary Seacole House have already begun. The new community library and healthcare centre will be built on this site while the existing leisure centre will be redeveloped to make way for the new one.
