Open House London showcases great design in every London borough. Click here to find out what you can see in Enfield this year.
Below, you can find out all about the local context of this borough's architecture, areas undergoing change and projects under construction.
Enfield is already a great place to live, work and visit with its good schools, transport links, low crime levels and quality housing but the borough is seeking to develop on its strengths and make use of current opportunities. Various projects such as Edmonton Green and the Palace Exchange shopping centre already show that Enfield is a place capable of improving initially but it is also a borough aware of long-term goals and commitments. This longer-term vision includes ideas of eco-communities and waterside living made more accessible by the boroughs proximity to the Lee Valley Regional Park.
Through the ‘Place Shaping’ strategy Enfield has improved the local environment in all manners of the word. As this strategy continues it will carry on improving green spaces, community feeling, healthcare whilst creating attractive and affordable housing and reducing crime rates. Four key areas have been targeted in further implementing Place Shaping; Enfield Town, New Southgate and the North Circular Road, North East Enfield- Ponders End and Central Leeside- Meridian Water. Ponders End is one of the key Place Shaping Priority Areas currently feeling the benefits of the council’s care. There are a number of large projects going on to improve the area including; Ponders End Recreation Ground, Ponders End Columbia Wharf Water Meadows, Ponders End Business Forum, South Street Campus and more. In Ponders End Recreation Ground alone vast improvements have already been made with new routes through the ground created, the entrance and the bandstand have been upgraded and more seating has been provided. The council soon hopes to add a community orchard.
Enfield’s sustainable community strategy 2007-2017 aims to make use of the borough’s natural resources. The proximity to the open countryside is to play a key part in resident’s health and wellbeing and green spaces will be further enhanced with the currently under development Parks Strategy.
